During the Spring 2017 term, I taught a course I designed entitled “Introduction to Field-Based Research Methods” for UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance. The course is required for majors, and introduced students to the theory, methods, and practice of ethnographic field research methods. Putting theory into practice, students learned how to and actually conducted oral history interviews, auto-ethnography, participant-observation; analyzed movement and sound; and wrote field notes. Students designed ten different projects and chose one to complete. Course readings, the focus of intense in-class discussion, derived both from ethnographic classics and field manuals.
