Between 2008 and 2009, I participated in the Black Liberation Movements Mosaic, a research project that contrasted the South African anti-apartheid movement with the US civil rights movement in Mississippi. Organized by the Community Studies Center of Dickinson College, the collaborative project involved oral history interviews with activists and participants, archival study, museum analysis, and engagement with the historical literature. This photo essay features some of the highlights I captured as project photographer conducting oral history and ethnographic research in Cape Town and King William’s Town, South Africa. Photos include Cape Town, the Manyanani Peace Park, Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned), King William’s Town and several townships in the Eastern Cape, an albino lioness, interviews, and several performances.
