This invited article, co-authored with musicologist Elisabeth Le Guin and published in the Ethnomusicology Review, explores performance ethics and cultural representation from an early music concert Le Guin and I directed. This 2015 concert with the UCLA Early Music Ensemble featured music derived from the nexus of European and Native American interactions during the so-called Age of Discovery. Presented as a dialogue, this piece details our struggles and the issues we faced working with and around topics of cultural appropriation, authenticity, and ethics.
